Asian markets also have the best brands for coconut milk (Chaokoh and Aroy-D) and also Thai curry paste (Maesri). WAY better than the stuff sold at most typical grocery stores! Also the fresh ginger and turmeric root is best deal around.

OH!!! Thank you for this tip, adding these to my list next time!! I usually buy my coconut milk at Costco but I’m excited to try something new.

I loveeeeed Rice Candy as a kid and I grew up eating Bok Choy, I'll put it on everything. Those small mushrooms I'll find any reason to eat them. My husband puts them in his home made Ramen and it's SO good.

But also I'll buy anything with Sanrio characters on them, and so will my kids lol.

My kids are obsessed with rice candy! So fun. Mmmm yes the small mushrooms, sooooo delish.

Yes anything Sanrio šŸ˜†šŸ‘ I also love Chococat, Keroppi, and Pochacco. The most feel good brand ever.

GURRRRRRL. I also will buy ANYTHING with Hello Kitty on it. Asian markets are the best best best, and they remind me of my childhood growing up in Hawaii. Making the tofu sushi burrito asap! And I didn't know ginger could be frozen, this is life changing info. My husband and I always buy way too much tea when we go to any of the Seattle-area Asian grocery stores, Yamamotoyama is our favorite line

Hello Kitty is the queen! šŸ¤ šŸ‘ That’s so cool you grew up in Hawaii!!! Those flavors must be such comforts to you.

Ahhhhh yes freeze the ginger!!! Game changer šŸ‘

I never spend enough time browsing the tea, I need to revisit next time I’m there— thank you for that tip! I do love all the floral favors.

I just meal planned today and put Ramen on two days this week… such a comfort meal for me.

Brittany Viklund's avatar

Me too!!! I love it with seaweed, tofu, edamame, bok choy, and corn in it, a hug in a bowl.

If you need soy sauce, you might as well make it Hello Kitty, am I right? Imagine the joy it would generate for me every time I use it!!

Brittany Viklund's avatar

Exactly!! The bottle is the perfect size for using at the table too. I was just on the Sanrio website this morning looking by at the pencil boxes which I do from time to time just for fun. Remember those double sided pencil boxes?! The best. Hello Kitty can do no wrong.

It’s me! I am the I-have-always-been-curious-but-nervous-to-go-to-my-local-Asian-market girl 🤭 This is a helpful primer & gives me a boost of excitement to finally check it out!

Brittany Viklund's avatar

Yay, Tricia! That’s wonderful. Please report back on the goodies you get and how you enjoy them— ohhhh you’re in for such a treat!!!

A bit off-topic, but I finally grabbed the brami pasta You recommended a while back and it was a hit for Valentine’s Day with Ina Garten’s favorite vodka sauce. (Tofu subbed for heavy cream for extra protein!)

Brittany Viklund's avatar

OMG that sounds DIVINE!! I’m glad you liked it, it definitely takes the cake for bean pastas, you’d never know!

loooove me some asian market goodies. and i'm absolutely gonna try that king arthur sesame pizza recipe + that orange tofu!

Brittany Viklund's avatar

Same!! I always walk out with more than I went in for. šŸ˜†

OMG Torie you will LOVE that pizza. I make ours with a pourable cashew mozz (Miyoko copycat recipe) and Field Roast or beet pepperonis, sooooo good. You’ll love that orange tofu too!

Added a bunch of these recipes to the meal plan for next week! Looking forward to trying them :) We live in a small town on an island with no Asian food market so sometimes it's hard to source... I'm a little jealous of your Asian food access!

This made me want to immediately go to my local Asian market and fill a basket!! The tip about freezing ginger and grating it straight from frozen is a game-changer. I've wasted so many sad, shriveled knobs over the years. Also, the cilantro affirmations made me laugh out loud. Thank you for this delicious guide :)

Keeley's avatar

Oooh! You made my husband happy. Can’t wait to try this recipe. He’s from Asia but I rarely make traditional food. You made it seem easy enough, haha. šŸ˜†

Your Sunday menus are some of my favorite posts!! Thank you. I look forward to them monthly. They always give me ideas of stuff to make. I, especially, love Asian food so this is exciting and I will be taking tidbits from it. Also, RPL salt and pepper tofu noodle dish is soooo good!! It's in my top 5 meals.

Megan Berry's avatar

This is so inspiring to branch out! We have several Asian markets in town too, and I definitely feel intimated going in.

Also, the tofu paragraph made me LOL and I’m ready for the follow up so I can incorporate more tofu in my life šŸ’Ŗ

Do you have any cookbook recs for beginners in cooking Asian-inspired meals?
