👏 Amazing friend! I am (almost) one month into my first low-buy year and it's life-changing. It's like you're finally seeing clearly for the first time, stepping off the consumer treadmill. So many habits to break. I did LOL at "slightly ill-fitting Old Navy." ALWAYS. I'm not into thrift shopping but I'm going to give It a go this year. I feel slightly smug and a little powerful that I can say NO to the marketing onslaught. I don't know how some of these influencers sleep at night.
And I'm 5'8"--it can be a challenge. You can't just buy any pants.
When I do buy, my goal is quality, fit, and slightly unhinged (color/pattern/something interesting).
YES YES YES. It is powerful, it's the dopamine hit we never knew we needed! And these days 😮💨😮💨😮💨😮💨 my dollar feels even more valuable as my voice and knowing I have power feels good. Thrift shopping is certainly a dance, I have found some wonderful gems but I think the consignment clothing stores are more of where it's at for my wardrobe. There is still a level of curating they do which helps.
Yes to quality! And yes to longevity, not chasing a trend is tough for me, I mean I barely just moved past skinny jeans 🤪 trust me I hate them but also finding wide-leg pants that work on me is no easy task! lol
So grateful for the ways you push and inspire me to do better, let's go girls!
I love this Brittany! Pre-SAHM I was a hairstylist and I shake my head at my younger self for how much I spent on clothing that I may have worn once. Now a days I get maybe a 3-5 new pieces a year for myself. My 17 year old daughter and her friends love to thrift and I always have her keeping an eye out for me. I love that, that generation is scouring bins.
Oh gosh I cringe thinking about my shopping habits at Forever 21 in my 20s. 😮💨😮💨 I agree, it's so refreshing to see the younger generations making thrifting a vibe! I think about how thrifting was perceived when I was a child, and I love that we are past that narrative!
I feel compelled to do this not for myself but for my children. I rarely buy anything new for myself, but I find myself purchasing a lot of clothes for my kids. They don’t care about brands (I used to, though 😓), and since they grow out of things so quickly, it makes more sense to buy items second-hand. That image from space really caught me off guard. Thank you for sharing it and prompting me to reflect on this. xx
I got fed up with my own tendencies to over-consume and knew that wasn’t the example I wanted to set for my son, so I decided in September that I was going to give this a try. Since then, I’ve bought one dress for a work Christmas party and that’s it 🥹🙌🏼 the experience has been so rewarding, and I’ve loved using Pinterest to get new inspiration for pieces I already have. Thank you for sharing your experience!!
Love this! I want to try it out this year too - just last week I resisted the urge to buy a cute Valentine’s Day sweatshirt just because it was on sale. I figured I’d wear it a limited time and I have plenty of pink shirts to wear to celebrate the day. I’m 3 months postpartum so I plan to invest in some jeans, but trying to be patient and not rush to buy them while my body’s still adjusting! Also letting myself buy new swimsuits this summer too because after 2 babies in 2 years, my body is just forever changed and I wanna make sure I’m comfy in swimwear!
Thank you for sharing your story with us and laying everything out! I am also on a journey to simplify my wardrobe and buy less. I haven't gone fully no-new things, but as you say, it's all about the balance! Of the few pieces of clothes I brought into my closet last year, the smallest percentage was new. I've also rented my clothes for several years now, which has been so helpful as I work toward understanding my own personal style.
I reach for the same pieces over and over and over again. So I’ve eliminated purchasing something new for an activity or event if I won’t wear it more than once and that has eliminated SO MUCH of the clothes shopping I was doing. I was just adding to cart instead of shopping my closet or seeking out the thrift to find something new to me.
And because I’ve eliminated a lot of unnecessary purchasing of clothes, I’ve been able to invest in a couple quality jewelry pieces I’ve been wanting for years.
I love this so much (almost as much as that wardrobe organized by colors 😍) This is something I've been working hard on also! It's crazy how few clothing items we actually need (or actually wear) but HOW HARD it is to let go of them- even though they're sitting having not been worn in years! ("But what if...?!?!.") I had my colors analyzed and that definitely helps cut down on alot of buying (and returning), especially since my color palate is basically the opposite of what is "trendy." But it has helped me filter out what looks best on me and more importantly what I feel my best in. Now kids clothes, on the other hand....send help.
I love the thoughtfulness here. Generally speaking, I’ve never been a clothing shopper (don’t get it twisted though, I do my fair share of over-consuming in other areas!) However, I currently don’t have enough clothing to even complete, like, 5 days of outfits without sweatpants joining in on the fun. So I’m working on getting pieces I actually like.
You know who my biggest style icons are though? Martha and Ina. Because they basically have style uniforms unless it’s a special event. I love that for me 🤣
