I use a 5 year journal, and usually do 3 sentences that I learned from Neil Patricia—1. What am I grateful for? 2. What am I letting go of? 3. What am I looking forward to?
When I was deep in postpartum/early COVID, my therapist suggested a 5 year journal, and I started doing a line a day before bed. In year 3, I pivoted to trying to focus on only the highlights of my day, even if they seemed small, and it’s been such a positive game changer for my overall mindset!
I love hearing how that small act has made a big impact for you, especially in relation to postpartum and motherhood. 🙏 The one line a day journal concept is so approachable and manageable, especially for new moms, I started one the day our last baby was born and it’s similarly helped me see the value in reflecting on the highlights!
This is such a good suggestion. I want to be a journal girl so badly, but I can never keep up the habit. I love the idea of starting with something simple and timebound - just 5 days!
This new series is wonderful. Looking forward to the future articles.
I would love to develop the habit of journaling. I have started so many times and then just stop. I love the idea of making a small attainable goal for 5 nights. 5 nights is a great place to start and it’s such a beneficial way to reflect on the little joys throughout the day.
I'm excited for this new series, Brittany! ✨ The gratitude practice I've been at the longest and that comes most naturally to me is taking photos of little things that catch my eye, whether its a bit of great typography, a shiny penny on the sidewalk, or a dapple of light that's dancing across our back porch.
Sometimes I post them on Instagram, but mostly those images rest in my camera roll. The practice of pausing, noticing, and appreciating are my mini grounding moments throughout the day!
As a very visual person, I love this practice so much. What a great way to cultivate a spirit of attentiveness throughout the day. ✨ Thank you for sharing!!
I always write down at least one good thing per day – it's what prompted me to start my 'Petite joys' series on my blog in 2016, which I recently brought over to Substack too!
I love this! Two years ago I got into the habit of using the Five Minute Journal and I love jotting down my three good things when I crawl into bed at night.

Looooove those questions, and love the framing of “letting go of” I could absolutely benefit from naming that! Thank you for sharing. 🫶

I’m so glad, Antonia! Thank you! My experience has been similar, those micro habits can really make an impact!!
I love that idea of placing your notebook on your bed to help keep the habit.
I’m so glad you found that useful!!

🥹💕 I love that!! So simple but something you can sustain over a generous length of time. 👏
